Anonymous "O Moon, when I gaze on thy beautiful face"
O Moon, when I gaze on thy beautiful face,
Careering along through the boundaries of space,
The thought has often come into my mind
If I ever shall see they glorious behind.
In this poem, there in an astronomer who is looking at the moon and wondering about the scientific aspects of it. When looking at the time of which this poem was written, there was little to be known about the space around the world as we now know today. This astronomer is looking at the moon, and exemplifying its beauty. The speaker then wonders about seeing the dark side of the moon. As we know today, this side of the moon is not seen by public eye of the individuals located on Earth. At the time this was written however, it was not known if the other side of the moon would ever be seen. The reason why I chose this poem is because my father loves astronomy. It reminds me of him, and how far science has come to understand more about the universe and how things work. I believe that this poem captures the concepts of the writers time, and the questions that were posed.
